Canon: The Dream Thieves, book 2 of The Raven Cycle - additionally including one year in Hell.
Age:
Appearance: played by: Diego Barrueco; from the book: Joseph Kavinsky … his eyes hidden behind white-rimmed sunglasses that reflected only the sky. The gold links of the chain around his neck glittered a grin. He had a refugee’s face, hollow-eyed and innocent.; There was nothing about Kavinsky that wasn’t despicable.; Everything about his facial structure — the long nose; the hollowed-out, heavy-lidded eyes; the dark arch of his eyebrows — was completely unlike the Valley faces [Blue]’d grown up with. Like many of the other raven boys, he sported massive sunglasses, spiked hair, a small earring, a chain around his neck, and a white tank top.; You wanted something to hurt you, he was it.
Canon Point: Kavinsky comes from the end of The Dream Thieves, after being attacked by a giant, flaming dragon on the Fourth of July.
Background: Relatively little is known about Joseph Kavinsky’s background. We know these things: he’s Bulgarian; he lived in New Jersey before he and his mother moved to Henrietta, Virginia; he runs with a group of boys at Aglionby who all are or have some connection to the immigrant community; he throws big parties with alcohol and drugs; he is a dreamer of things, a forger, a thief; he’s killed at least two people, and dreamed them both back.
So, a brief overview of Kavinsky’s life: Joseph Kavinsky was born in Bulgaria around the fall of Communism or shortly after. He and his parents immigrated to the US while he was still young. Around the start of puberty, Kavinsky’s father attempted to kill him, and in self-defense, Kavinsky killed him instead. He dreamed his father back, nearly totally accurate, and he and his mother moved from New Jersey to western Virginia. In Virginia, Kavinsky attends Aglionby Academy, an elite all-boy’s school. He falls in easily with a group of boys (known only by their surnames): Skov, Swan, Jiang, and Prokopenko. At home, his mother becomes more dependent on cocaine and becomes invasive of Kavinsky’s life to the point where he starts drugging her, and often spends time at his friends’ houses to avoid being home. Kavinsky takes up street racing, drug use, and partying. By fifteen, he’s successfully known for huge “substance parties” just outside of Henrietta, which draw in people from up to forty-five minutes away (in that part of Virginia, this includes most of southwest Virginia, central I-81, and parts of eastern West Virginia). Between fifteen and seventeen, some confrontation with Prokopenko results in Prokopenko’s death and dreamed rebirth; the only major difference is how Kavinsky has taken over control of their friend group. At sixteen, Kavinsky witnesses Ronan Lynch being attacked by a night horror outside a graveyard near Prokopenko’s house; from this, he knows that he and Ronan are the same thing: dreamers and thieves. He spends the next year obsessively pursuing Ronan, culminating in a 2-3 day bender of alcohol, sleeping pills, and dreams. When, at the end of their time together, Ronan rejects Kavinsky, he goes off the edge. He pesters Ronan incessantly, leaves him a dreamed up car, and eventually kidnaps Ronan’s little brother Matthew (also a dream thing). At the Fourth of July party that Kavinsky throws, Ronan confronts Kavinsky to rescue Matthew. Kavinsky summons a giant fire dragon from his dreams, which he ultimately uses to kill himself.
CRAU: Kavinsky spent a little over a year in Hell. He was subject to torture, kidnapping, ritual sacrifice, and a specific disregard for any redemption or reconciliation with his sins. Starting in November of that year, Kavinsky began to have progressive demonic changes, including a blackening of his skin on his hands and feet, a lengthening of his fingers, a progressive disregard for temperature variation, and, by the following spring, a slow change in the color of his eyes.
During the attempted coup of Hell by Spike Speigel, Kavinsky deliberately refused to align himself with any side of the fight, though he gave Spike explosives and helped those against the coup report on attempts.
Toward the end of his time, he had amassed gifts from Lucifer including a broken down (and rebuilt) sports car, and shares in Club Penance with rights to sell his dream drugs. As well as his demonic changes, he also has several torture/mutilation scars, a knot tattoo from his forced sacrificed to the Veiled Order, a handful of carved words from various events, and a small feather/leaf tattoo dreamed onto his right shoulder by Ronan Lynch.
Personality: Kavinsky is a destructive teenager, described as “infamous”, “despicable”, and simply “an asshole” by other characters in the book. He is a foil not only to Ronan, in that he is very literally what Ronan could be come with his ability to pull things from his dreams and Ronan’s own issues with dealing his emotions and destructive behavior, but a foil to all of the Raven Boys, turned up to a high degree—he is the darker, more insidious elements of privilege and wealth that Gansey represent; the violence and lack of restraint that Adam struggles with; the slow decay of humanity that Noah is experiencing without the excuse of death. He exhibits issues respecting others personal boundaries—particularly with Ronan, but also Blue, and specifically telling Ronan that “consent is overrated”—and has little regard for any authority or property. Possessive, easily bored, and controlling, Kavinsky burns hot and fast for the things that drive him. He describes and thinks of himself as a visionary, but also proclaims that he is specifically a thief above all things, highlighting his preference for lying. While he is known to lie and has a reputation as a ‘master forger’, even before Ronan finds out that these are also dream things, Kavinsky’s lies tend to be the product of the aggrandizing nature of rumors and lies of omission, rather than specific manufactures of his own.
Overall, Kavinsky appears to be well liked by the darker elements of the community, in that he is mysterious and has the ability to get people things that they want—drugs, fake IDs, “something to hurt themselves”, or anything else that might be what they desire; he also has a rather reverent following because he presents a public appearance of brutal honesty and danger that is alluring, particularly to teenagers. He is well known, in Henrietta and the surrounding area, as being “untouchable” and “invincible”—and he behaves exactly like it, with his flagrant disregard for authority and dangerous behaviors. When he doesn’t get his way or get things that he wants, however (particularly things that his obsessive focus has been turned to), he becomes manipulative, harassing, and actively threatening; even his attempts to lure Ronan’s attention involved undermining the appeal of Gansey’s friendship and attention in a manipulative manner, as much as it involved presenting himself as a desirable associate.
Weaknesses/Temptations: Kavinsky is a creature of indulgence. He easily gives in to temptation in whatever form it’s offered in and is content to misbehave. That being said, he is particularly drawn to risk taking behavior, ranging from street racing to sneaking into places he shouldn’t be, and general misbehavior.
